What’s a flausen+scholarship?

Who is the flausen+ scholarship aimed at?

The research scholarship flausen+ is aimed at groups of professional artists who want to pursue or research an idea within the performing arts, but outside a production, and who are  finding it difficult to obtain funding. The scholarships are designed for four artists. The research project is in the foreground; so, directors, choreographers, video artists, authors, musicians, actors, visual artists, etc. can participate. Existing groups, new groups or artists who are interested can apply, also those who want to explore something new and want to look for other artists to do so.

And there is no age restriction!

What does the scholarship offer?

A. A working stay of 4 weeks for 4 people in one of the theatres of residence of the project. The residence phase will be agreed after the final selection.
Current residences are: Theaterlabor Bielefeld, theaterimballsaal Bonn, Freies Werkstatt Theater Cologne, Theater neben dem Turm Marburg, Theaterwerkstatt Pilkentafel Flensburg, Sensemble Theater Augsburg, Societaetstheater Dresden, theater wrede + Oldenburg.
B. A research grant of currently 1.400 Euros per person for the entire period of four weeks plus free accommodation for 4 (up to 5) persons.
C. A research budget for materials (stage, costumes, media) by arrangement. *
D. A professional mentor will be made available. Mentors are suggested by the jury and the residence theatres, and applicants can also make suggestions.
E. Dramaturgical, technical, organizational advice and accompaniment of the work after arrangement with the theatre of residence.
F. The theatre also provides a contact person who takes care of the coordination between the artists and the theatre of residence and who will give the group information about the city (where can I get what? etc.) etc.
G. The theatre of residence takes care of the accounting, so that the artists can devote themselves exclusively to their project during their scholarship.
H. Networking with possible future sponsors, cultural offices, venues and other production promoters.

*Note: Each research idea has to be evaluated individually and needs different premises. “By arrangement” means that the scholarship holders and the theatre of residence sit down and discuss what is meaningful and necessary in order to ensure the greatest possible support for the research idea.

What requirements are expected of the artists?

1.The Applicant must have their primary residence in Germany.

2. The professional status of all participants is required and must be proven. The participants must prove their participation in at least 2 productions or professional work (own productions or cooperations).

3. The scholarship is designed for 4 people, of which at least 3 people should work on stage.

How many artists can be involved in a flausen+scholarship

The scholarship is designed for 4 people. Funding for only one, two or three person is currently not provided. In principle, there is the possibility to involve more than 4 persons if the project requires it, and if the scholarship holders independently raise funds for the additional participants (living costs of currently 350 Euro p.P./week plus separate accommodation costs, if applicable).

Can more than 4 people be part of the residency?

If the project demands more than 4 people there sure is the possibility do involve more people if the group is able to raise the additional funds for additional artists (at least 350€/week for maintenance plus, if needed, accomodation).

flausen+headquarters will surely provide support and information as well as letters of reference.

Caregivers, accompanying people, and interpreters during the flausen+scholarship

When it comes to finding new artistic forms taking risk and showing urgency, the perspectives of the artists that have structurally excluded or are underrepresented on stage are extremely important. Whether its groups consisting of mothers, mixabled groups or groups that need the support of an interpreter – sometimes there is a demand when it comes to needing support to be able to participate in the project equally to others.
flausen+ does not cover the costs for the mentioned cases – the groups have to raise them by themselves. But we support the groups with the application for the costs and letters of reference.

Can third-party funds be used in the project?

Generally no, because this is a research project and not a production promotion. As with everything in life, there is a “but”: If the IDEA definitely requires it, you can search for additional sponsors, for example, to allow more than four participants to take part in the project. But agreement and support from the theatre of residence are required.


Application for flausen+scholarships

Which application documents must be submitted?

In the first round of applications, only the application form from this website must be filled in and sent to us email by email  within the tendering period. The date of submission is valid, not the postmark.
Everything else follows after the selection of the preliminary jury for the second round of applications. If you are selected by the preliminary jury, you will receive an invitation to the “finalchoice#”. For the “finalchoice#” you must send in the CV of all group members, a work plan for the possible residence and possibly mentor suggestions. In the “Final Choice” you have the opportunity to present your research idea in the form of a five-minute presentation on stage and then talk to the jury about it for three minutes

What should be considered when applying?

Your research idea should be clear. It should be clear from the application that you have an open research interest and will not use the residence to set up a production. In addition to the brief presentation of the idea in the application form, the idea of the implementation is also important. In addition, it should be briefly described why you as an artist or as a group find this idea so important.

To describe the research project as concretely as possible and give examples
Often, there are gaps in the application that are concerned with the “how” of the research project. Sometimes so called “generalities”, contain many interesting ideas, but unfortunately none of them are specifically named, further elaborated or integrated into context with respect to aesthetic research. Themes are often not specifically aimed and their main focus is not clear. Therefore, examples of how and where on the stage they could be applied in a theatrical context and how the research during the residence could be  applied – even if the examples given are later rejected in the project- this way the project becomes much more tangible for the jury.

Consider the content and the aesthetic research point in the flausen+ scholarship:
those who research only in terms of theoretical content do not need a stage. It is therefore important to describe in the application which aesthetic starting points the content-related research question offers. The aesthetic aspect very often remains without explanation or is suggested only by the selection of a theory. Examples help to make the planned procedure comprehensible.

Make the urgency clear
Often the urgency of the project, and above all the urgency with which the scholarship is needed due to the artistic situation of the group, are not apparent from the applications. Thus, there are no artistic, but merely socio-political reasons for a scholarship (“we would like to work together” / “we live in different cities” / “we need the money”, etc.). What is particularly interesting for the jury, however, is something about the artistic urgency of the residence: what is your performance and sponsorship situation? (Do you have sponsors and audiences that you cannot go beyond, but urgently want to?) Are you artistically at a point where you want to rethink your existing and intrusive approach? Do you want to artistically enter a terrain on which you have no experience and why is that important to you? Are you in an artistic field that is neglected and needs new impulses (like theatre for children and youth)!

The application should not read like a piece development / production intention
Flausen+ is a model project for the awarding of free research scholarships that promotes daring and unusual ideas. A risk involves the possibility of failure. Flausen+ grants the possibility to fail. If the applications show that an end product / scenic goal has already been determined, the preliminary jury assumes that it is a development of a piece and not a focus on the research subject. The jury then sees no need for the shelter of a four-week free research residence.

Is it possible to apply in a different language rather than German?

No. Whether it’s professional Dance, Video Art, Performance, Object Theatre, but also theoretical reference or academic discourse – terminology is complex and it gets even complexer when using a foreign language. That’s why we only accept German applications.

8. How often can I apply?

As often as you have an unusual idea. It is also possible to re-apply with the same idea. Even if you have already been invited to the “Final Choice”, this is no reason to drop the idea. After applying, there is the opportunity to receive feedback, which can help with a renewed application. Even if you have already completed a scholarship at flausen+, you can apply again in the same or changed constellation, a new project or the continuation of an previous scholarship.

Every year from December 15th to March 1st  of the following year you have the chance to apply for a flausen+scholarship.

How are the scholars selected?

1. A nationwide expert jury, selected by the flausen+bundesnetzwerk, selects the artists who receive a scholarship. A preliminary jury will first select from the applications a number of 18 applications for the main jury. These will then receive as finalists an invitation to a short public presentation during the finalchoice# event. There is the opportunity to present the research idea on stage in the form of a five-minute live presentation and then talk to the jury about it for three minutes.

2. Criteria for the jury are primarily the risk, the research idea and its concept of implementation; as well as the social relevance of the topic and the scholarship requirements of the applicants.

3. The successful candidates will then be notified and will be informed about the further procedure (scholarship contract, financial framework, concrete work plan, etc.).

How to present your research idea ?

In the case of the “finalchoice#”, the type of presentation is open. It can be shown live or via videos. Likewise, e.g. it is possible to show a model with which the artists want to work.  You could expand aesthetically/performative on an example in your application.

What is required of us as an artist / group?

Must we work out a premiere for example?

A. The project is a research project. With this scholarship the research of scenic arts should be made possible independently of a “saleable” result.

B. During the residence, attendance is mandatory for all parties involved. Absences are limited to the weekends (there is a 5-day week, whereby which days of the week in agreement with the theatre of residence are irrelevant). Further jobs / secondary employment during the residence period are excluded or only possible in special cases by arrangement. To ensure the living costs during the research residence, the scholarship holders receive the weekly maintenance allowance of 350.00 Euro per person per week.

C. At the end of the residence there is a public event, the “makingOFF#”, to which the artists commit themselves. This is an open format developed especially for flausen+, which is moderated by flausen+/ the residency theatre to create a safe space for the group and the audience to get into discourse about the scenic research. It’s about conveying material from your research and taking the audience with you in the unfamiliar format (in parts). Within this format there is also the possibility to receive feedback from the audience as additional research material

D. The artists commit to cooperate in the evaluation in such a way that they are available to the residence theatre once a week during the period of the scholarship and to provide the theatre with the documents and media required for communication with the sponsors and the public (photos, Videos etc.). In addition, a weekly logbook, published in excerpts on the flausen+website, must be maintained.

E. If productions come to life from the research at flausen+, the scholarship holders should point out the scholarship in the form indicated by the model project.

F. Should a production based on the flausen+ residence be completed, the artist group agrees to perform the result of the research in the theatre of residence after agreement and financing.

Note: Upon receipt of the scholarship, a scholarship contract will be closed to legalise all details.

Has the scholarship to end with a premiere?

No. flausen+scholarship offers a research residency with a public research day at the end. At the so called makingOFF# the group presents their findings and discusses them with the audience.

How are the residence periods allocated?

The residence phases for the following year (10 scholarships in 2021, distributed to 8 theatres of residences in Hesse / Lower Saxony / NRW / Schleswig-Holstein / Bavaria / Saxony) are planned in the course of the application process with the individual theatres for the respective year. Normally, the residence phases are between January – April (rarely) and May – September (often). An overview of all past phases can be found here (only available in german))

The planning with the theatres of residence will be carried out as early as possible for the following year, in order to make them known to the scholarship holders as soon as possible.

Basically, the theatres give residence phases for their houses according to their needs, since they have to provide their theatre for four weeks and integrate this into their own program planning. The scholarship holders cannot dictate any phases, but they can name their wishes regarding the phases, the federal state, residence house, etc. The final distribution of the scholarship groups to the residences/phases then takes place in consultation with the groups and the individual houses. As many wishes and requirements as possible of all scholarship groups are taken into consideration with regard to the available phases.

What has to be considered in residence?

flausen+ supports artist groups and not single artists. Therefore it is important for the artists to work together on equal footing. During the residency the scholars form a GbR (Gemeinschaft bürgerlichen Rechts) that will dissolve at the end of the residency.

Mentoring and support through the residency theatres

the groups will be provided with support through the theatre that carries out the residency and will be getting a qualified mentoring.
Once a week the group has a meeting with one person of its residency theatre to bring them into a practical exchange and enrich the mentoring.
Through a specific mentoring the groups will be accompanied during their research process. The jury allocates a mentor through their stated potentials and needs . The mentor has a presence of approximately 4-5 days during the 4 weeks of scholarship – Especially on the introduction day and the day of the making OFF.
Neither the mentor, nor the residency theatre are authorised to give instructions. They give feedback, new impulses and share their experiences – what the groups make of it is up to them. The mentor meets the group once per week and attends the makingOFF# and the Introduction. The exchange between theatre house, scholars and mentors promotes dialog and creates a practical discourse and networking opportunities.

How are mentors chosen?

The mentors are suggested by the jury. Depending on the Application and Presentation at finalchoice# the jury choses specific mentors to give impulses for optimal support of the research project. The group is able to send in their own suggestions for mentors and will be taken into account by the jury. It is important that the group and the mentor do not have a previous working relationship to ensure fresh impulses and enable a new discourse.

flausen+headquarters contacts potential mentors and, if they accept the terms of conditions of flausen+, are brought into contact with the scholargroup. The mentor and the group discuss their project, methods, and ideas. Both sides have to agree to the mentoring.
